WHAT IS COUNSELLING?

Older young people prefer to use mainly talk and discussion to look at their problems and difficulties. I use a teen-friendly way of working on their issues at their own pace.

Teenagers are moving away from family, thinking about what they want for themselves in future, deciding what to keep, what works for them and how they want to develop as individuals. This is hard to do if there is some problem bothering them.

They sometimes need a place that is away from family and friends, where they can explore difficult feelings, review what is happening, make decisions, or simply be heard by someone outside the situation.

Issues that cause problems may include:

School and friendshipsExamination stressTraumaBullyingDepression and anxietySexuality and adolescenceRelationships and family issuesLoss, bereavement and family breakdownLow self-esteem and lack of confidenceAnger and difficult behaviour

Working on these issues within a confidential, trusting relationship with a counsellor can increase happiness and wellbeing and a sense of being capable and effective. Which is what most young people want.
