WHAT IS EMDR
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. This is no longer considered a good title for the therapy but it has stuck!
EMDR is well-proven in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and is also used all over the world for treating large and small traumas.
The client holds in mind the worst part of the trauma and the feelings involved and moves the eyes from left to right and back again continuously for a few moments. They are then invited to share whatever comes up, although this is not discussed. Eye movements are resumed until the feelings no longer have the strength and sting of the original occasion.
It is thought that this imitates the processing that occurs during REM sleep, and that it enables the thinking and feeling parts of the brain to work together to assimilate difficult, frightening, worrying events.
This is only a very brief indication of a form of therapy used by specially-trained therapists to resolve certain client issues. For more detail please see here.
If EMDR seems an appropriate intervention for your child or young person, we will discuss this first.
